My name is Elise Hassan and I live just off Myddleton Road in Wood Green.
I have lived in North London all my life. Growing up here and being passionate about cinema, I very much wanted there to be an affordable and accessible space where me and my friends and family could come together and see films that were not readily available in the usual mainstream cinemas, without spending a small fortune on cinema tickets, snacks and drinks!
I very much wanted there to be a place where our community could come together and celebrate and highlight what makes our borough so special. Over 65% of the Haringey population is made up on non-white ethnic groups, with nearly 200 different languages spoken. Haringey's Global Cinema Club will be a non-profit, volunteer-led community cinema and space where our cultural diversity can be celebrated through the screening and sharing of non-English language cinema.
Our screenings will be interactive!
There will be an introduction beforehand where we will introduce the film, exploring where it is from and who made it as well as some interesting facts about the making of the film. We will have a discussion/Q&A after the film where people are free to share their opinions, insights and observations of the film with one another. This isn't a cinema that will just bung a film on and rush you out as soon as it is over... This is about coming together as a community and having a shared experience through cinema!
Where will the cinema be?
Our screenings will be held in accessible venues local to the residents of Haringey! I am hoping to set up our screenings in spaces close to our doorsteps, in venues you know and love!
When will we begin screening films?
WE ARE NOW SCREENING FILMS VIRTUALLY AND IN PERSON! 🎉
Most of us are wondering if it’s safe for a cinema to open at a time like this. While the most recent government guidelines state that cinemas can open with social distancing in place I personally do not feel comfortable opening up just yet. I want to open up when it is absolutely safe to do so, so that our first screening can be the most enjoyable, relaxed screening it can possibly be with all that is happening around us. We are a not for profit community cinema so profit is not an issue for us, we definitely want to be putting people first! What I want first and foremost is for everyone to be safe, healthy and happy! We are hoping to host our first screening in Autumn/Winter, fingers crossed!
In the meantime, subscribe to our mailing list and follow us on Instagram and Facebook where I will be posting film recommendations, articles and more! I hope to inspire and get you excited about what is to come in the near future, so when we do finally get to enjoy life freely again, supporting and being a part of the community will be the first place to start! And there will be lots to experience, see and do on the other side! A rainbow is definitely on the horizon! 🌈
If this is something you might be interested and would like to know more about, please sign up to our mailing list where we keep you updated on when our first screening will be held!
It would be absolutely wonderful to get to know YOU a bit better by filling out a questionnaire so I can discover what kind of films you’d most like to see, WHERE you’d most like to see them and WHEN you’d like to see them! This is first and foremost your community cinema and your input is vital to make it the best it can possibly be!
